Short answer

What is generative engine optimisation (GEO) and how is it different from SEO?

GEO is the work of getting a brand cited as the source of an answer inside generative search engines — ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity. SEO aims to rank a page in a list of results; GEO aims to get individual passages of that page quoted. The difference is the unit, not the degree: SEO optimises the page, GEO optimises the paragraph. Galata Media runs this across three layers — measurement, content structure and markup.

Key takeaways

  • Generative engines score a page passage by passage, not as a whole; a sentence that loses its meaning out of context never gets quoted.
  • A claim an engine cannot verify does not make it into the answer — the engine skips the whole page. This is why an unsourced statistic costs you.
  • GEO starts with access, not content: if robots.txt blocks GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot, no amount of content work will ever be read.
  • GEO does not replace SEO. The same page has to rank in a list and be quotable as a passage.

Can these crawlers read your site?

GEO starts with access, not content. If robots.txt blocks one of these, no content work will ever be read by that engine.

AI crawler access check

Deliverables

  • 01

Access audit: robots.txt, llms.txt and server-side blocks checked against 12+ AI crawlers, one by one

  • 02

A 40–75 word, self-contained answer passage on every page

  • 03

schema.org markup: Organization, Service, FAQPage, Article, and @id links between the entities

  • 04

Questions rewritten in real search language; every page owns exactly one

  • 05

A source registry binding every number on the site to a verified primary source

  • 06

Citation tracking per engine, reported monthly

How it runs

  1. 01 — Measure

We establish whether the engines can read the site at all, and which questions the brand currently appears in. This is the baseline every later step is measured against.

  2. 02 — Access

robots.txt, llms.txt and server rules are corrected. Skip this step and no engine ever reads the content work that follows.

  3. 03 — Structure

Every page takes ownership of one question. The answer passage is written, tables and FAQs are added, schema.org markup is put in place.

  4. 04 — Track

Citation visibility is tracked engine by engine. We report which question was won in which engine, and rewrite the ones that were not.

GEO packages

Get seen in AI search, and get traffic out of it.

Two options: a $499 setup and report paid once, or a monthly package sized to your site. What the monthly one adds is regular reporting, continuous tracking and a target score written into the contract.

Galata Media does this work

Frequently asked

How long does GEO take to show results?

Access fixes — robots.txt and llms.txt — take effect on the engine's next crawl, usually within days. Content and markup work returning as citations depends on how often that engine refreshes its index. Galata Media takes the baseline measurement in week one, so progress is read from measurement rather than estimated.

Does our existing SEO work go to waste?

No. Technical health, crawl access and topical authority do the same job on both sides. What changes is the shape of the content: a generative engine quotes a single passage rather than the whole page, so that passage has to stand up alone. Galata Media restructures existing pages around passages instead of rewriting them from scratch.

How do you verify that we are being cited?

An agreed set of questions is asked in each engine at regular intervals, and we record whether the brand appears as a source in the answer. Measurement is per engine because the page ChatGPT cites and the page Perplexity cites are frequently not the same one. The report shows questions won and lost together.
