What exactly is the difference between GEO and SEO?

September 14, 2026 · 5 min read

Short answer

What is GEO and how is it different from SEO?

SEO aims to rank a page in a list of results; GEO aims to get a passage from that page into the answer itself. The unit differs: SEO optimises the page, GEO optimises the paragraph. They are not rivals — the same page has to rank in a list and carry passages that survive being torn out of context.

Key takeaways

  • SEO's unit is the page. GEO's unit is the passage.
  • Technical health, crawl access and topical authority do the same job on both sides, which is why existing SEO work is not wasted.
  • What is specific to GEO is shape: the answer passage, the question-shaped heading, the table and the source.

Why did the unit change?

In a list of results the user clicks a link and sees the whole page. In a generative engine the user sees the answer, and the page may never be opened. When the engine assembles that answer it takes the passage that best matches the query, not the page.

That changes what you are writing towards. It is not enough for a page to be good; a paragraph inside it has to be accurate and intelligible without the sentences around it.

What changes in practice?

Headings turn into questions, because the engine matches heading text against the query. Every page gains a short answer paragraph that names its subject and avoids pronouns. Comparable information moves into a table: a table is extracted whole, while the same facts in prose are scored sentence by sentence and usually lose.

And citing sources stops being optional. In the Princeton GEO study, citing sources, adding statistics and adding quotations were the three tactics, out of nine measured, that raised visibility most.

Frequently asked

Will GEO replace SEO?

No, because the two do not do the same job. People still click results in a list, and those clicks still sit where purchase intent is strongest. What changed is that one page now has to address two readers at once: the person who clicks the link and the engine that quotes the passage.
